Core Values Series: Communion Transforms Our Identity
"Communion transforms our identity" points to a deep spiritual reality: as we engage in communion with God and with one another, our very essence is changed. At the heart of this transformation is the work of the Holy Spirit, who empowers and guides us into becoming who we are meant to be in Christ.
The term "communion" refers not only to the act of sharing in the Lord’s Supper but also to the ongoing relationship we have with God and the body of Christ. "Communion" in the Biblical sense is more than just the intimate sharing of ideas and feelings. It's a sharing in the very person of Christ Himself where He becomes tangible life and nourishment to us. It is through communion with God—prayer, worship, reflection on Scripture, and surrender to His presence—that we are transformed. This transformation is not merely behavioral but is a change in the core of our being, our identity.
The Holy Spirit plays a central role in this process. Scripture tells us that the Spirit is given to dwell within us, to guide, teach, and shape us into the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18). As we enter communion with God through the Holy Spirit, our identity begins to align with who God has called us to be. The Spirit works in our hearts to reveal our true identity as children of God, loved and chosen, and to dismantle the false identities we may have built on fear, shame, or worldly values.
In communion, we experience the intimacy and closeness of God. This relationship is transformative because it draws us into the reality of who God is—holy, loving, and full of grace—and reveals how we are called to reflect that nature. The Holy Spirit helps us to see ourselves through God's eyes: forgiven, redeemed, and beloved (Colossians 1:21-22). This divine perspective empowers us to shed the labels and identities the world places on us and to embrace the identity we have in Christ.
The transformation that occurs through communion is not just personal but communal. The Holy Spirit unites believers, making communion with one another a source of mutual edification. As we connect with others in the body of Christ, the Spirit works through these relationships to sharpen, encourage, and help each of us grow in our understanding of our identity. Together, we bear witness to each other’s transformation and support one another on the journey of becoming more Christ-like.
Furthermore, the Holy Spirit equips us to live out our transformed identity. Through His power, we are enabled to live in a way that reflects Christ’s character—demonstrating love, joy, peace, patience, and all the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Our actions and words become a reflection of our renewed identity, impacting the world around us as we live out the truth of who we are in Christ.
"Communion transforms our identity" reminds us that this transformation is not something we achieve on our own. It is the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit within us, shaping us through our relationship with God and our connection to others in the faith. Through this communion, we are continually becoming more like Christ, reflecting the identity we have been given by the Holy Spirit.
